FAB11 | A Nation of Neighbors “The new millennium saw the emergence of entities that can strongly influence the international scene: the *Fab Labs. Different for development, organization, character and traditions, these organizations provide a strong local development but at the same time light up conflicts that have long prevented a path to Unity. “ That’s how Montanelli speaks about the *FabLab movement, or, more correctly, about the birth of Italian Municipalities around 1000-1250. Back from Fab11 in Boston, I carry with me a bag full of contacts, future projects, new inspirations. Yet, inside me remains a big doubt. FAB11 was the opportunity to touch closely the origin of a global movement that today… Read more

5 more days to go for the deadline; Reshape focuses on the definition of this language, proposing a new challenge to makers and designers: RESHAPE15 | wearable technology competition. In this context, disciplines as programming and electronics become highly interconnected, blurring old boundaries and merging different fields of knowledge. Fashion has been already affected by this radical change. Therefore, clothes, shoesand other accessories can now incorporate elements of hardware and software, generating a peculiar mix between fashion and computation that is incredibly fertile and inspiring. Data becomes Beauty, Interaction becomes Emotion. As a result, a new aesthetic is emerging. for more info; Read more
Here is the outcome of the workshop Computational Couture workshop organised by noumena during the week of Pavilion of Innovation 2015 at Beyond Building Barcelona/Construmat; the International Construction faire curated by IaaC|Fab Lab Barcelona. The Computational Couture workshop focused on expanding the horizons of dress making towards an algorithmic approach, and taking design beyond the physical functions of the body (movement, protection, temperature regulation) towards the evolution of cultural expression. During the workshop participants coming from different backgrounds had the possibility to work in a multidisciplinary context to co create this custom fitted clothing that brings together computation, fashion design and digital fabrication.

UNFOLD | Milan Design week The workshop aims to approach the re-generation of a forsaken warehouse, named ‘SBODIO32’, at the edge of Milan’s new design district. The exploration of the interactive relationship of folding and material, form and structural behavior has been translated, into the fabrication of a 1:1 scale pavilion installed in “SBODIO32” and showcased among Milan’s Design Week exhibits. (FouriSalone 14-19 April 2015) The workshop was developed in collaboration with Noumena Architecture and NOUS Engineering as well as “Ece Tankal” for projection and video mapping.

A Hyperuranion sky, a blue setting, as in a different dimension, a space in which white ideas and reasoning stand out, words come to life through drawing. The architect is endowed with power and has the opportunity to shape what comes out of his imagination. The Noumenon is the thing-in-itself, the thought that dwells in the human mind: it is the representation of our ideas. We should be able to develop appropriate answers about the world that surrounds us through reasoning and critical analysis. Aldo Sollazzo and Matteo Di Sora interpret this concept in the best possible way. They are quite young and started their own business, Noumena, on a… Read more
A New Concept for Shape-Shifting Architecture That Responds to Heat. Architects have long explored the value of adaptive architecture through conceptual projects (we’ve seen it with tensegrity structures like this one modeled after the behavior of slime mold). The project, Translated Geometries, tackles the idea by developing a new use for Shape Memory Polymers, a composite material that can deform and return to its original state when activated by cues like heat, humidity and light. In its proposal, a project of Efilena Baseta, Ece Tankal and Ramin Shambayati (Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalunya), the team continues that exploration by looking at how physical spaces could someday morph based on… Read more
